What is recycled polyester (rPet)?

Recycled polyester, also known as rPet, is a fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. It helps reduce plastic waste in landfills and requires fewer resources to produce compared to virgin polyester. Additionally, it generates fewer CO₂ emissions, making it a more sustainable choice.

How is recycled polyester made?

There are two main methods for recycling polyester:

  • Mechanical recycling: Plastic bottles are melted down and spun into new yarn. However, this process can only be repeated a few times before the fibers degrade in quality.
  • Chemical recycling: The plastic is broken down at a molecular level and reformed into new yarn. This maintains fiber quality indefinitely, allowing for continuous recycling, but it is a more costly process.
Is recycled polyester a sustainable option?

Yes, recycled polyester is a more sustainable alternative to virgin polyester since it reduces waste and requires fewer resources to produce. However, it still has environmental drawbacks, such as being non-biodegradable and taking years to break down in landfills.

Does recycled polyester release microplastics?

Yes, like all synthetic fabrics, recycled polyester sheds microplastics when washed. Using a microfibre filter or washing bag can help minimise the release of these particles into the water system.

Can recycled polyester be recycled again?

Yes, but the recyclability depends on the method used. Mechanically recycled polyester degrades over time and can only be reused a few times, while chemically recycled polyester retains its quality and can be recycled indefinitely.
